The jersey worn by Edmonton Oilers’ Wayne Gretzky when he won his fourth ice hockey Stanley Cup has been sold by Grey Flannel Auctions for $1,452,000 making it the most expensive piece of ice hockey memorabilia ever auctioned, overtaking Paul Henderson’s 1972 Team Canada shirt that had previously sold for $1.3m.

The Edmonton Oilers beat the Boston Bruins 6-3 with Gretzky winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the National Hockey League’s most valuable player of the season, in what turned out to be Gretsky’s final appearance for the Oilers.
Gretsky’s shirt, with champagne stains from the post match celebrations, and puck marks from the game play, had never been auctioned before and after bidding opened at $250,000 it took just 12 bids to reach the $1.452m hammer price.
The same Grey Flannel auction saw Gretzky’s 1988 final game-used gloves sell for $204,162.
