As a Honus Wagner baseball card just sold for $7.25m and a Mickey Mantle card is expected to sell for $10m, a new, unique, one-of-a-kind baseball card is bidding for the limelight.
It's a baseball card featuring an 8-year old Mark Zuckerberg.
The odd bit? Zuckerberg had the card made himself.
In 1992 Mark Zuckerberg attended the Camp Elmwood summer camp, but prior to doing so he approached Irvin Simon Photographers to make him a baseball card of himself, with fictitious stats on the reverse including a 0.920 batting average. (The boy had ambition!)
At the end of Summer camp Zuckerberg presented the card to his favourite camp counseller, Allie Tarantino, who asked young Mark to sign it for him.
Now 30 years on Tarantino has decided to sell the card via ComicConnect.com with a starting bid of $1.00.
Tarantino has said: “Mark was one of my campers and one day he came in with this card and gave it to me — I was stunned that he was on it! I had never seen a Little League baseball card before, so I asked him to sign it for me. I never could have guessed what amazing things he would do!”
“I’ve been telling this story for quite a while, about how I knew Mark as a camper, and it always astonishes people to see that this card actually exists. But I feel that my part of the story is over, so due to Mark’s prominence in the tech world, and the fact that he’s one of the most famous people on the planet, I figure now is a good time to sell this card and put it on market.”
The physical card is being sold with documentation authenticating the card’s history, and Zuckerberg’s autograph, and will be accompanied by an NFT.
The card is certainly getting publicity and Zuckerberg himself has helped promote the sale on his Instagram feed, as Instagram tries to expand into Digital Collectible NFTs with new integrations with Coinbase wallet and Dapper to allow users to post digital collectables supported by Ethereum, Polygon and Flow.
So, ultimately we have a unique one-of-a-kind Little League baseball card, made by, and signed by Mark Zuckerberg.
Among Zuckerbergs’ Billionaire contemporaries; an Elon Musk signed dollar bill has auctioned for $7,500, lunch with Warren Buffett has recently sold for $19m, a Steve Jobs signed cheque has sold for $55,000, and we all remember Jack Dorsey’s first tweet from 2006 that sold for $2.9m in March 2021.
Yet Mark Zuckerberg has not been that collectible. You can readily find a Mark Zuckerberg signed photo for as little as $250.
In fact he's down with Jeff Bezos. A Bezos signed 1999 Person of the Year Time Magazine recently sold at auction for just $363, attracting just one bid.
Our guess is the Mark Zuckerberg Little League baseball card will sell for around $250,000, a decent price, and one that won’t embarrass the cards’ maker. The buyer at that level? Probably Meta.
