Honus Wagner baseball card sells for $7.25m in Goldin private sale

A 1909-11 Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card sold for $7.25m in a private sale arranged by Goldin Auctions, setting a new world record for the most expensive baseball card ever sold, beating another Honus Wagner card that sold for $6,606,000 in August 2021 at Robert Edwards Auctions.

The T-206 cards were originally released by the American Tobacco Company for cigarette promotions until the non-smoking Wagner objected, and the cards were recalled. As such only approximately 50-60 Honus Wagner cards are known to exist today.

The most valuable baseball cards sold now stand as:

  • $7,250,000 August 2022 Honus Wagner
  • $6,06,000 August 2021 Honus Wagner
  • $5,200,000 January 2021 Mickey Mantle
  • $5,200,000 April 2021 LeBron James
  • $4,600,000 February 2021 Luca Doncic

But the Honus Wagner T-206 time at the top will be short lived, as current bidding for the finest known 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps Card, graded 9.5+, sits at $7,300,000 with 22 days remaining.

The card is expected to sell for $10,000,000 at Heritage Auctions on 27th August 2022.

The card had previously been the most expensive card of all time when it sold for $50,000 in 1991.
