Megalodon teeth smash auction estimates at Sotheby's Natural History sale

Sotheby's Natural History auction sale in New York has closed with the Gorgosaurus skeleton selling for for $6,069,500 against an estimate of $5,000,000-$8,000,000.

Excavated in 2018 in Choteau County, Montana the Gorgosaurus measured 9 feet two-and-a-half-inches tall and just under 22 ft in length, and was mounted ready for exhibition display with 79 fossil parts.

However it was the dinosuar teeth that really excelled at the auction.

A six-inch tall Tyrannosaurus Rex Tooth with tip serrations, discovered at the now name Tooth Draw Quarry in Buttle County, South Dakota, sold for a massive $75,600 against a $5,000-$8,000 estimate.

And four Megalodon teeth broke records.

The Megalodon, actually meaning 'Big Tooth', was a huge shark that lived 20 million years ago.

An ivory-cream coloured 9cm tooth found in Lee Creek, Aurora, North Carolina sold for $13,860 against an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

An excellently preserved 15cm early Pliocene Megalodon tooth discovered in Georgia, USA, and approximately 5 million years old, sold for $10,710 against an estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

Another early Pliocene example from an upper jaw position, discovered in the Sukaabumi District in West Java, Indonesia, and measuring 16.5cm sold for $10,710 against an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.

An excellently preserved and complete black and gray tooth originally from the lower jaw position discovered in North Carolina sold for $12,600 against a $1,000-$2,000 estimate.

Lot 289; a stunning original Triceratops skull discovered in South Dakota and approximately 66 million years old.

Measuring 228cm long and weighing 200kg the skull sold for $661,500 against an estimate of $250,000-$350,000.
