The letter, on Kensington Palace letter head paper, is addressed to a Mrs Cotton, and Diana writes:

"If only life were so simple. It is my dearest wish.

"Sadly the reality is I am one of three people in a triangle."

The letter is dated May 11th 1995, a full 6 months before the now infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir on November 20th 1995, when Diana notably said "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded".

The letter has an estimate of £1,500 to £2,200 and a starting bid of £1,500.

We wrote yesterday that David Lay Auctions in Penzance in Cornwall are holding an auction of 32 Princess Diana handwritten letters in their 16th February Antiques and Interiors Auction, with a letter in which Diana suggests her phone has been bugged expected to sell for £5,000 - £10,000.

In our opinion a letter referring to the famous 'third person' in her marriage, and quite possibly the earliest known mention of the 'three', is historically a more significant piece of Princess Diana memorabilia.

This would prove to be a complete bargain at £1,500 - £2,200 and we'd expect it to sell for £20,000+ as a true Museum Grade historical item.
