The Golfauction.com have completed the sale of the Robert Simpson golf memorabilia collection comprising 100 lots including rare golf clubs, photographs and pro-shop paraphernalia.
Born in 1862 Simpson was a Scottish golfer, golf course architect and bespoke club maker who founded The Simpson's Golf Shop at the Carnoustie Links golf course, the second oldest golf shop in the world.
The auction included an original 1870's St Andrews cabinet card photo taken by Thomas Rodger, featuring Tom Morris Sr and Tom Morris Jr, which attracted 4 bids before selling for $4,659.
Old Tom Morris and Robert Simpson had worked together on the redesign of the Carnoustie Links course.
Images of Morris's Sr and Jr together are rare and this was believed to be only the second example to have ever been sold at auction.
The auction also included a Robert Simpson Hickory golf club used by Freddie G Tait to win the 1898 Amateur major at Royal Liverpool golf club which sold for $13,456 against an estimate of $1,500.
The club attracted 14 bids as it is rare to find an authentic club from a pre-1900 Major winner.
Golf paraphernalia sold well with one of SImpson's original shop signs selling for 21% above estimate.
The bright yellow 'golf clubs - repaired, renovated, re-gripped' sign, designed to sit on the shop counter, fetched $121.
Whilst one of Simspon's annual printed catalogues almost doubled its $50 estimate selling for $92.
The catalogue included all the shop inventory from 1924 and featured one of Simpson's handmade drivers on the front cover.
