The caravelle was bought brand new by Professor Hawking in 1988 and used on a daily basis for 10 years, even appearing at his wedding to Elaine Mason in 1995.

The van was used by Hawking until 1999 when his coniditonw orsened and a new automobile was required to cater for a new wheelchair design.

The van has remained in the family and been consigned by Hawking's nephew, with 90,000 miles on the clock and a full service history.

Hawking's nephew has said:

"It has been a real dilemma as to what to do with my uncle's VW, as it's not being used and  is taking up room in a much-needed garage; the family would like a science or Professor Hawking enthusiast to be the next custodian of it, rightly appreciating it for its special connection to such an enigmatic and important British figure."

The van is being sold with no reserve or guide price, and is accompanied by Professor Hawking's disabled parking permit.

Normal 1988 Caravelle's can be found for as little as a couple of thousand pounds, but given the Hawking link we wouldn't be surprised to see this sell for £20,000+. After all it's probably Sheldon Cooper's dream set of wheels.

You might be surprised how rare Stephen Hawking memorabilia is.

Early examples of his autographs are rare as hens teeth and have sold for £35,000+ at auction, whereas his later 'thumbprint' signature is more common but can still fetch £3,000+ at auction.

Whilst not signed by Hawking his disabled permit could be worth £1,000 alone.

But these prices pale in comparison to Professor Hawking's first electric wheelchair which was expected to sell for £15,000 at auction in 2018.

The final hammer price?

£300,000.
